Road bikers can make easy day trips on Highway 101, or State Routes 106 or 300, as the scenic roadways parallel the curving shoreline of Hood Canal. The shoulders are narrow, however, so be mindful of motorists distracted by the breathtaking views. To get further off the beaten track, pack the panniers and make Jarrell Cove State Park your overnight destination. In late August, the RAPSody ride (Ride Around Puget Sound) takes sojourners on a 165-mile pedal-powered loop that includes the North Bay hamlets of Victor and Grapeview before heading inland to Shelton and points south. Mountain bikers would be hard-pressed to find a single-track and offroad trail system as extensive as that of the Tahuya State Forest. Located near Belfair, and just an hour from Tacoma or the Seattle-Bremerton ferry dock, this popular recreational forest contains nearly 161 miles of marked ORV trails. Challenging single-track, steep hill climbs, and rolling dirt roads cut through 23,100 acres of timber and lake land areas. Use caution, as trails are open to motorized off-road vehicle as well as mountain bikes and equestrian riders. For specific user information, contact the South Puget Sound regional office at (360)825-1631. Download a trail map Tahuya State Forest trail map here.
