Don the helmet and clip into your pedals, for there is no shortage of road or trail from which to experience the beauty and thrill of this picturesque landscape. Mason County even has a new Recreation Map, which identifies a plethora of bike routes from border to border and beyond. Follow the link to download the map from this website.

Favorite routes include the 90-mileSouthwest County Loop (Dayton, Matlock, Shafer State Park); the Harstine Island Loop (9.4 miles); the Mason Lake Loop (24 miles); the Skokomish Valley Road (11 miles); the Kamilche-Bloomfield-Old Olympic Highway Loop (12 miles); and the Grapeview Loop (7.8 miles).

Road bikers can make easy day trips on Highway 101, or State Routes 106 or 300, as the scenic roadways parallel the curving shoreline of Hood Canal. The shoulders are narrow, however, so be mindful of motorists distracted by the breathtaking views. To get further off the beaten track, pack the panniers and make Jarrell Cove State Park your overnight destination. In late August, the RAPSody ride (Ride Around Puget Sound) takes sojourners on a 165-mile pedal-powered loop that includes the North Bay hamlets of Allyn, Victor and Grapeview before heading inland to Shelton and points south.

Mason County Transit provides service throughout the county, and if the road gets too busy or you grow too tired, remember that all Mason County Transit buses provide bike racks. For schedule and route information, call 360.426.5033 or visit www.MasonTransit.org.

Bicycles and tandem bicycles can be rented at Hood Canal Adventures on State Route 106 in Union.

Mountain bikers would be hard-pressed to find a single-track and offroad trail system as extensive as that of the Tahuya State Forest. Located near Belfair, and just an hour from Tacoma or the Seattle-Bremerton ferry dock, this popular recreational forest contains nearly 161 miles of marked ORV trails. Challenging single-track, steep hill climbs, and rolling dirt roads cut through 23,100 acres of timber and lake land areas. Use caution, as trails are open to motorized off-road vehicle as well as mountain bikes and equestrian riders. For specific user information, contact the South Puget Sound regional office at (360)825-1631.
