Washington State Ferry System in the Puget Sound

Getting to Hood Canal and South Puget Sound

Whether by car, by air, by rail, or by Washington State's famous ferry system, traveling to Mason County's communities can be nearly half the fun.

    * I-5 Corridor at Tacoma or Olympia – 35 min. from Mason County
    * Tacoma Narrows Bridge – 25 min. from Belfair
    * WA State Ferry System at Bremerton – 30 min. from Belfair
    * WA State Ferry System at Southworth – 40 min. from Belfair
    * WA State Ferry System at Bainbridge Island – 1 hour from Belfair

Drive times to points within Mason County:

    * From Seattle, WA - 1.5 hours
    * From Portland, OR – 2.5 hours
    * From Olympia, WA - 30 min. to Shelton
    * From Bellingham, WA – 3 hours to Shelton
    * From Bainbridge Island, WA - 45 min. to Belfair
    * From Vancouver, BC – 4 hours
    * From I-5 - 20 min. to Shelton
    * From Belfair, WA - 20 min. to Union; 30 min. to Shelton; 40 min. to Hoodsport

Mason County Public Transit:

Mason Transit offers safe, cost-effective and creative transportation options!

    * Fares - Travel within Mason County is FREE, and a nominal $1 charge is imposed for trips to Bremerton, Brinnon and Olympia.

    * Special Event Services - Mason Transit provides community service transportation for special events within Mason County open to the public. Park your vehicle and avoid the congestion at special events around Mason County such as Grapeview Water Festival; Allyn Days; Forest Festival; Hoodsport 4th of July Celebration; Taste of Hood Canal; and OysterFest.

    * Regional Connections – You can travel to Mason County via Mason Transit from anywhere in the Hood Canal/South Puget Sound Region. Scheduled connections with neighboring transit systems are made with Jefferson Transit at the Brinnon Store; Squaxin Island Transit at the Kamilche Hub; Kitsap Transit and Washington State Ferries at the Bremerton Transportation Center; and Intercity Transit at the Olympia Transit Center where connections are made with Grays Harbor Transit, Pierce Transit, AMTRAK and Greyhound service.

    * Bike Racks - Mason County highways can be challenging for bicyclists due to narrow shoulders and traffic.  If you'd like to combine cycling with riding the bus, all Mason Transit buses are equipped with bike racks. Use this service and travel safely along Highways 101, 106 and 3. Take your bike along to hike in the Olympic National Park and pay $0 to half the fees of a car!  

    * General Public Dial-A-Ride and Routed Service – Schedule a ride or use the routed service to get to work, school, medical appointments or to go shopping or attend social activities. All service vehicles are accessible and meet ADA requirements.
