Matlock is located far from any other town in Mason County. It lies near the Satsop River drainage zone, a generally flat, rural countryside known for its Cranberry Marsh and a handful of tiny, secluded lakes. It originated as a logging, hunting and trapping community, and a large lumber mill remains busy not far from town. From Shelton, Matlock lies a few miles west of Lake Nahwatzel, a small lake community. For those with an accurate map and a sense of adventure, Matlock is located on a little-traveled byway to the Pacific Ocean beaches at Aberdeen, Westport and Ocean Shores. This winding, rural route will take you to Schafer State Park, a popular summer swimming destination, and then onto Montesano in Grays Harbor County before connecting to Highway 12.
