Where to Be and What to Do: Independence Day, 2015

Careening into town, in a flurry of reds, whites, and blues is an Independence Celebration in Hood Canal you would be almost unpatriotic to miss! Come for the delicious BBQ, stay for the fireworks, and celebrate the purple mountains majesty of the Olympics with Alderbrook Resort & Spa and Walter Dacon Winery this July 2 – July 5, 2015.

Imbued with Northwestern Tradition is Alderbrook Resort & Spa’s annual Thunder on the Canal event. On Thursday, July 2 from 11am – 11pm join the rest of Olympic Peninsula’s partying patriots at this family-friendly event full of summertime fun. Enjoy smoky BBQ and satiate a summertime thirst in the beer garden before heading out to the dance floor set to the tune of the talented Biff Moss and his ukelele. Throughout the day, Alderbrook Resort & Spa will be giving away 50 #wildsideWA koozies–be there to grab yours!

The grand fireworks show starts after sundown to set the long weekend off with emphatic ‘ooh’s’ and ‘ahh’s’. If you decide to stay overnight at the resort, admission is free, otherwise non-hotel guests gain admission for $5.

One of the grand events of the day will be the fifth annual oyster-eating contest at which five contestants will take on last year’s winner who shucked and slurped over seven dozen oysters. Think you have what it takes to dethrone the champ and win yourself a two-night stay at Alderbrook? Sign up and get more information here.

No proper Independence Day celebration would be complete without award-winning wine, good friends, and good hot dogs. On the 4th and the 5th from 12pm-6pm each day, celebrate America in style at Walter Dacon Winery. Live blues and soft jazz featuring “Teacher” on the patio, artesian wine in-hand makes for the perfect day in the sun celebrating those broad stripes and bright stars. Enjoy gourmet hot dogs with all the fixin’s, baked beans, and potato chips for a smart $8.

If a community-oriented, kid-friendly day is more your style, the Tahuya Day Parade delivers the goods from 10am to 4pm on July 4. Surrounding the processions is a variety of local artesian craft and non-profit booths along with kids’ activities and foot stompin’ live music.

There’s no need to preregister for this event, all are welcome and encouraged to participate in the parade. Sign-in at Kay’s Corner starts at 12:15. Earn some karma points by participating in the raffle, proceeds from which benefit North Mason High School students and North Mason programs for children and families.

We love celebrating the ol’ red, white, and blue and will be updating often leading up to these events. Keep up on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest for the latest in and around the Olympic National Park, and let us peek into your festivities with #explorehoodcanal #hoodcanal and #wildsideWA. Cheers!
