Hood Canal Travel Guide: Mother's Day

Itinerary #10: Mother’s Day

As jewelers and holiday cards holler at us to pack Mom’s day full of pink ribbons, glimmering gifts, and bouquets full of flowers, we find ourselves wondering what the lady of the day really wants.

Before you read any further, make her big day a no-brainer by getting a chance to win a spa weekend getaway with her at Alderbrook Resort & Spa. Enter our Mother's Day Sweepstakes.

Now, flash back to our younger years, and we stumble into memories full of family road trips and cheesy photos in front of National Monuments. We fly by memories of her cheering from the stands during Sunday sports games, and encouraging us when our little legs got too tired on a short hike. The unifying strain throughout them all though, is her unabashed grin when we’re truly together.

So on a day when kitschy advertising encourages you to express your appreciation using a diamond as a mouthpiece, why not say it yourself during a weekend away full of togetherness on the wild side of Washington.

Read on for our top four suggestions for making the most of you + Mom time in Hood Canal.

Rocky Brook Falls

Rocky Brook Falls

1. Take Mom on an Adventure near Shelton, Washington

Start a new tradition. Because face it, the days of station wagon ramblings across dusty highways are so out. Waterfall peeping is so in. Plan a trip for two down Hwy 101 from quaint Quilcine to beautiful Union, stopping at gems like Rocky Brook Falls and Vincent Creek Falls along the way.

To earn a host of brownie points, swing by the Hama Hama Seafood Co. Store in Lilliwaup, grab a dozen fresh oysters and whip up some simple condiments for a delectable picnic and a delighted mother.

2. Surprise Mom with a Spa Day at Alderbrook in Union, Washington

Most of the Mother’s Day hype at Alderbrook Resort and Spa is centered on the annual and always-delicious Hood Canal-inspired brunch (for which you should nab your reservations ASAP). Though we are hard pressed to think up a better way to start your weekend than a spa treatment (and we have a hunch Mom will agree).

There are a myriad spa packages and specials that offer exclusive luxurious treatments and discounts on rooms. Some even offer goodies like sparkling water or dining credit. After a lifetime of motherly TLC, return the favor with a sojourn in a world-class full service spa.

3. Give Her a Treat to Enjoy Later

There’s a wealth of delicious nooks to explore in Hood Canal. Afraid you and Mom won’t be able to get to them all this Mother’s Day? Pick up a gift card, and plan on returning to the wild side of Washington for a sampling of seafood at Xinh’s Clam and Oyster House, artisan spirits at The Hardware Distillery Co., or a fresh seafood bounty at Taylor Shellfish Farms.

There are a number of quaint wineries specked about Hood Canal, and any wine-loving mother should get a glass of Pinot on her big day. Walter Dacon Wines does tastings on-site as does Hoodsport Winery and Stottle Winery to name a few. Check out the comprehensive list to plan a full day.

4. Make the World More Beautiful at Theler Wetlands

Thanks to your mother, the world is a more beautiful place with you in it! Take to the trails on Mother’s Day to leave Hood Canal as lovely as ever when you volunteer with mom at the Mary E. Theler Wetlands. The community center and the surrounding trails, grounds, and gardens are a gift to the community through Sam Theler’s bequest to the North Mason School District, and has long since been one of the best places to go to birdwatch.
