Half Shell, Full on Awesome: OysterFest

If you find yourself anywhere near the Olympic National Park on the weekend of October 3, be sure to hightail it to Shelton to get in on the action of an oyster-obsessed throng of shucking masters. And if that isn’t enough to entice your seafood loving self into getting over here, there are countless other pearls to stumble upon during this annual gathering of foodies, runners, music lovers, and all-around fun-havers.

The 34th annual OysterFest, sponsored by the Skookum Rotary,  is a celebration centered on one of the most outlasting culinary traditions of the Olympic Peninsula. Much less of a fad, much more of an art form, the oyster assumes a quirky but important role of the Northwest culture. Ostreaphiles from near and sometimes very far gather for this one-of-a-kind gathering.

The centerpiece of the OysterFest is the West Coast Oyster Shucking Championships: a marvel to witness and the initial reason for the festival's inception. Each year, amidst 500 oysters and a slew of cramped hands, a champion shucker is crowned and awarded ultimate bragging rights along with a sizeable cash prize. Think you have what it takes? Sign up here!

If going head-to-head with some serious oyster fanatics isn’t enough of a rush, jump start your day on October 4th with the Shuck & Share 5k Run. Benefits assist Project share–a program aiding hundreds of low-income families with their electric bills. Keep the karma points rolling as you sign up as an OysterFest volunteer here.

If your cup of tea is more like a local glass of wine, OysterFest has you covered. Each year, more than seventeen wineries showcase the bottles that have made an emphatic mark on the worldwide wine-soaked map! Stroll down the wine-tasting hall, sipping pretty pinots or robust reds and chat with local wine makers and other aficionados such as you. But if hoppy goodness is more your style, the microbrew area features over 20 different breweries putting their best beers forward.

ith a packed, dual-stage live music schedule and plenty of hands-on exhibitions for the kids, a celebration rooted in shellfish delicacies expands beyond the palate to create an interactive, social, family-friendly weekend for all to enjoy. We will see you there!
