A true product of the wild side of Washington, local Burt Cooper’s photography is busting at the seams with action and excitement. This Belfair native has never shied away from an adventure, and has devoted his professional career to capturing it in all forms and fashions around Hood Canal.
Burt—well known in his hometown for his action sports photography—is no stranger to any hidden corner of Hood Canal. He’s captured everything from skateboarding competitions, to wakeboarding, to motorsports and beyond.
Meet Burt Cooper
His extensive body of work well represents the array of excitement around every corner of our neck of the woods. You’ll want to know this wild one.
WHAT MAKES SHOOTING AROUND HOOD CANAL AND ON THE OLYMPIC PENINSULA SPECIAL?
[I’m inspired by] the endless scenic locations and the numerous activities you can do here.
WHAT GEAR/TECHNOLOGY DO YOU USE TO KEEP FOCUSED ON WHAT YOU DO BEST AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?
Besides your normal photographer's essentials like camera, lenses, flashes, laptop, etc., I also have all the sports equipment to participate in the activity I'm shooting. This is necessary for a number of reasons.
First, it’s important to have the means to get to the often-remote locations your shooting at. Truly, there isn't a better way to understand the sport your shooting than to do it and since a lot of these sports are more "freeride" oriented than competitive, participating presents more opportunities to shoot. Bottom like: it's just really fun to ride!
WHICH PHOTOGRAPHERS INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?
My brother and sister-in-law, Forrest and Amy Cooper owners of Cooper Studios; Videographer Sean Kilgus of BFY Productions; Snowskater and Videographer Adrian Rasmussen; Snowskater and Photographer Gergis Maximus; Snowskater and Videographer Alan Gerlach; Wakeboard Photographer Joey Meddock; and Tiffany Trammel-Zurn of Zurn Imagery.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOOT AROUND HOOD CANAL?
Mason Lake (because I live there and it's awesome!). Though it’s hard to pass up shooting anywhere in the Olympic Mountains.
WHAT KEEPS YOU INSPIRED TO SHOOT ACTION SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHY?
I love showcasing talented riders doing cool sports and showing people how fun it is to get out there and enjoy our outdoors.
Keep an eye out for more photographic inspiration on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest, and be sure to tag your creations with #wildsideWA so we can keep tabs on your travels about the Olympic Peninsula.
